2 Kodiak King Fisheries to Close

The Alaska Department of fish and game just announced that two salmon fisheries will be closed this summer on Kodiak Island. All king salmon will be closely due to the fact that scientists have not been satisfied with the kings returning upstream to spawn. The decision was not taken lightly however a similar situation occurred on the Ayakulik in the 1970’s early 1980’s and the numbers rebounded after the closure.

The Chinook or king salmon has been declining State wild Deshka river down 68%, Kenai down 45% and the Anchor river down 69%.

Alaska continues to lead the way in managing a tightly run fishery to ensure that no species of fish is over fished, hopefully this measure will give the kings a chance to rebound.
