There has been a proposal made by The National Oceanic Atmospheric Administration to deny entry to any ship on lists for illegal fishing activity. Illegal fishing has a significant impact on Patagonian toothfish, bluefin Tuna and other high demand fish. Currently 90 ships are on the list. There has only ever been two recorded instances when illegal fishing vessels docked in American ports one was in 1987 in Alaska causing political upheaval.
The new rule also proposes to stop any person or company providing services to the ships.
Illegal fishing is indeed a global issue and depletes fish stocks thus in turn hurting the livelihoods of fisherman and communities who fight to preserve sustainable fishing.
The rule was proposed on January 11th and the public can comment until Feb 25th.
