Zales the Nations second largest jeweler with 1.8 million in sales in 2009 is joining the ranks of jewelers planning to boycott gold from the proposed Pebble Mine in Alaska’s Bristol Bay area. The mine has received opposition from Environmental groups due to fears it will harm the abundant salmon population. Zales states that its decision was to protect the salmon population and environment. The No Dirty Gold Campaign is championed by The Earthworks and Partners group. There is now over 30 jewelers on board. This is significant as 80% of the demand for gold comes from jewelers.
This is seen as another victory for the Salmon fisheries of Alaska.
