Alaska’s world famous Denali National Park is to be featured on the United States Mint, America the beautiful program. The coin will be issued in 2012. The Denali National park was founded in 1917 to protect America’s highest peak, 20, 230 feet Mount McKinley. The word denali means the great one in the native Athabaskan language and refers to the mountain itself, in fact locals, often still call it this and not Mckinley.
The park supports and protects amazing fish and wildlife including salmon, grizzly bears, caribou, wolves, dall sheep and moose. The area’s history spans a stunning 12,000 years and covers an area of over 9 million acres.
The Mint wants to highlight America’s National Parks to help spark a renewed interest in parks, forrest’s and wildlife. To appreciate the natural beauty of the land and to ensure that the parks are preserved for future generations.
