President Obama made an announcement last week on the Governments plans for off shore drilling in Alaska. Area’s were approved of Alaska’s arctic coast but not around Bristol bay. The President also supported drilling in the Chukchi and Beaufort sea’s on existing leases but no new ones.
Fisherman and environmental groups are happy with the Bristol bay ruling but worried about plans to drill in the Arctic over fears of oil spillage’s and damage to wildlife. The President feels this balanced approach will please all parties and move America towards a country less dependent on foreign sources of fuel.
The US Interior Secretary stated that Bristol Bay is too special with its large sockeye population and wildlife, its a national treasure that needs to be protected.
